WSKA World Shotokan Karate Championships 2013 - 28th September to 29th September

2013 WSKA Championships, Liverpool : The KUGB England Team

The KUGB's England Squad achieved remarkable success winning five Gold Medals at this year's WSKA World Shotokan Karate Championships.

Karateka from all around the world descended on the City of Liverpool as the KUGB hosted the World Championships at the Echo Arena over the weekend of 28/29th September.  With over 800 entries from 28 countries, the Tournament ran over two days and lived up to expectations with 'world class' competitors producing Karate performances of the highest standard.

The KUGB was strongly represented at the Championships with International Teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.  The KUGB England Team were outstanding and took a total of Five World Titles.

James McGorian won Gold in a very exciting Senior Men's Kumite Final against Older (USA).  This was a significant achievement as he made the successful transition from Junior to Senior Competitor.

Hisham Saif, still a Junior, entered the Senior Men's Kata and took First place with a superb performance of Gojushiho Sho in the Final.

The England Team of Hisham Saif, Chris Hamilton and Jack Somers won Gold in the Junior Mixed Team Kata, with an outstanding performance of Sochin.

In the Junior Ladies Individual Kumite, Rebecca Rawcliffe fought strong all day and stormed to victory, against Cullberg (Sweden) in the Final, to become World Champion.

Nicole Donoghue, Rebecca Morrison and Beth Nicholson won the Cadet Ladies Team Kumite beating Poland in a close and exciting Final.

Members of KUGB England and KUGB Wales Squads added further medals to the impressive haul.

In the Senior Ladies Kumite, England's Rhianne Blundell and Holly Sterling both fought well during the day and came Joint 3rd.  Holly unfortunately had to withdraw under Doctor's orders due to an injury sustained during the elimination rounds.

Lloyd Birt (KUGB Wales), still a Junior, showed significant progress by coming 4th in the Senior Male Kata.  In the Junior Men's Individual Kata, Lloyd took the silver with an excellent performance of Gojushiho Sho.

The England Mixed Junior Team who had won Gold the previous day then entered the Senior Men's Team Kata and were placed third with a fine performance of Sochin.

England's Senior Ladies Team Kumite consisting of Rhianne Blundell, Cristina Finta, Caroline McGrath and Holly Sterling were narrowly beaten in the Final by Hungary to take silver.

In the Junior Ladies Team Kumite, England's Rebecca Rawcliffe, Nicole Donoghue and Beth Nicholson won the Bronze.

The Junior Men's Team Kumite event saw both England's Cameron Graham, Chris Hamilton, Sam Light and Matty Humphries alongside the Welsh team of Jordan Cleaver, Phil Nichol, Stefan Rees and Jamie Mathews achieve Joint 3rd.  An excellent showing from both teams.

In the Cadet Men's Individual Kumite, England's Ethan Armstrong fought well throughout the day to take the Bronze.

The English Cadet Men's Team Kumite Team of Ethan Armstrong, Robert Crowney, Fraser Grice and Ryan Spencer took the silver in an exciting final against Russia.

In the Children's Female Individual Kata, the first time WSKA has staged this event, Rachel Edwards from Wales won the silver.

During the Finals, on each day, KUGB England delighted the audience with a demonstration.  On Saturday, Hisham Saif with team mates Chris Hamilton, Jack Somers, Stuart Amos and Sam Light produced a dynamic performance demonstrating the application of Kata Unsu.  The next day John Bruce assisted by Chris Hamilton, Sam Light and Ryan Spencer gave a tremendous self defence demonstration against attackers with knife and Bo.  Both demonstrations were very well received by a very enthusiastic crowd.

The KUGB would like to thank all of the spectators who came to the WSKA Championships at the Echo Arena Liverpool this weekend for their support.  We would also like to thank everyone who was involved in the running of the Championships.   Your tireless hard work and dedication significantly contributed to the huge success of the tournament.

A great performance from everyone - congratulations to you all.
