ESKA Championships, Portugal 2013 - 22nd November to 24th November

ESKA championships 2013

Karateka from all over Europe descended on the seaside town of Povoa de Parzim, Portugal to compete at the European Shotokan Karate-Do Association (ESKA) Championships over the weekend of 22-24 November. With competitors from 20 different countries, the tournament ran for three days and lived up to expectations with "top class" Karate performances of the highest standard.

The KUGB was strongly represented at the Championships with international teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Following their tremendous success at the WSKA World Championships in Liverpool in September the KUGB's England Squad achieved another remarkable success by taking a total of six European titles, two silver and seven bronze medals to put them at the top of the overall Championship table. Furthermore, KUGB Wales added to the medals with 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

In the Senior Male Kumite, Jonathan McGorian fought strong all day to take Gold. This was a significant achievement as he finally won his first individual medal after nine years of competing at an international level.

Jack Somers, still a junior, entered the Senior Men's Kata and took first place with a superb performance of Gojushiho Sho in the Final.

In the Junior Team Kata, the England team of Stuart Amos, Hisham Saif and Jack Somers added to their recent World title, with an outstanding performance of Gojushiho Sho to become European Champions. They added a silver in the Senior Men's Team Kata on the final day of the tournament.

Rebecca Rawcliffe, in the Junior Ladies Individual Kumite, was on superb form all day and added the European Champion title to her recent World title. Rebecca, along with team-mates Nicole Donoghue, Beth Nicholson and Rebecca Morrison, beat a very strong Russian team to take the Junior Ladies Team Kumite title.

Beth Nicholson fought strong all day to win the Cadet Ladies Individual Kumite in an exciting final.

Members of KUGB England and KUGB Wales squads added further medals to the impressive haul.

Caroline McGrath fought well all day to reach the final and won silver in the Senior Ladies Kumite.

In the Senior Men's Team Kumite, Joseph Rawcliffe, James McGorian, Ryan Tucker, Jonathan McGorian, Harry and Cameron Graham narrowly missed out on reaching the Final losing to hosts Portugal to take joint third.

Holly Sterling took bronze in the Senior Ladies Individual Kata with an excellent performance of Gojushiho Sho.

In the Senior Ladies Team Kumite, England's Rhianne Blundell, Caroline McGrath, Holly Sterling and Cristina Finta took the bronze, narrowly missing out on the final.

Lloyd Birt (KUGB Wales) took the silver with an excellent performance of Gojushiho Sho in the Junior Men's Individual Kata.

The Junior Male Team Kumite saw England's Cameron Graham, Fraser Grice, Matty Humprhies and Sam Light take bronze.
 
Meleri Pryse (KUGB Wales) took silver in the Cadet Ladies Individual Kata with a great performance in the final.

KUGB England's Connor Wilson in his first European Championships took 4th place in the Cadet Male Individual Kata.

England's Cadet Men's Team Kumite, Ethan Armstrong, Robert Crowney, Ryan Spencer and Connor Wilson took bronze.

In the Cadet Men's Individual Kumite, England's Ryan Spencer won bronze having to withdraw from the competition due to injury.

The Welsh team of Meleri Pryse, Hannah Rees and Kirsty Smith won bronze in the Cadet Ladies Team Kumite.

The KUGB would like to thank all of the families and supporters who travelled to the ESKA Championships in Portugal for their support.
