Matt Price - British Open Championships - 4th September 2004

KUGB England squad member, Matt Price, took part in the British International Open Karate Championships held at Crystal Place, London, on the 4th September 2004. This is an annual event which attracts some of the finest competitors from around the World, including many of the top competitors from the World Karate Federation (WKF).

Matt entered this event alongside one of his training partners, Paul Newby, who is nine times English Karate Governing Body Champion and current WKF World and EKF European Bronze medallist (in the under 60 Kilo category). Matt and Paul have been great friends for about 3 years now, training regularly together about three times a week.

Matt entered the heavyweight category - over 80 Kilo - and took silver medal. On the way to the final, Matt beat competitors from Germany and Sweden but his most notable win was against the French competitor Chantalou, the current WKF European Champion. In the semi-finals.Matt was losing 4-nil but pulled it back to 4 all and then beat him in a first-to-score fight off. Matt was eventually beaten by another French competitor in the finals.

Paul unfortunately had to retire injured from the event, but he is now back training hard for the forthcoming WKF World Championships this November in Mexico, where we wish him the best of luck.
