KUGB Grand Slam Competition - Saturday 3rd September 2016

KUGB Grand Slam - September 2016 : The KUGB Squads

The Karate Union of Great Britain's (KUGB) International Squads of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales came together on Saturday 3rd September at the new Queens Park Sports Centre, Chesterfield for the final Grand Slam of 2016.

As a major event in the KUGB calendar, the Grand Slam has grown significantly in size and importance over the years. There are no medals to be won at the Grand Slam, no rostrum to stand on, just the Pride of competing for your Country and an opportunity to impress your Coach. The Grand Slam also gives the KUGB National Coaches the opportunity to test and assess their Squads for the upcoming International Competitions.

As with every Grand Slam, Squad members assemble from all over Great Britain a couple of hours prior to the Competition to undergo Squad Sessions with their respective Coaches. Once the Coaches had put the Squads through their final preparations there was a brief interlude as the Spectators began to arrive.

Many of the competitors in action this weekend were very experienced with National, European and World Champions amongst them, as well as those new to the Squad this year.

During the eliminations and finals the competition was fierce and there were some outstanding performances that entertained the crowd. Sensei Sherry (9th Dan), Chairman and Chief Instructor of the KUGB, was extremely pleased with the strong attitude and spirit of all of the competitors. He was particularly pleased with the ability and determination of the young Karateka coming through the ranks, promising a very strong future for the KUGB.

A competition of this calibre requires Officials at the highest level and so, along with KUGB National Referees and Judges, there were also a large number of International Referees and Judges present along with our team of Timekeepers and Recorders.

Our thanks go to Dudley Wheatcroft and the members of Satori Shotokan Karate Club, the Manager and Staff at the Queen's Park Leisure Centre, our team of Medics and Beverley Boam of Take a Break Buffets for feeding our busy team.
