Christian is an experienced Karate Instructor and Competitor with over 30 years experience in all aspects of Shotokan Karate. He started training in Shotokan Karate in 1985 at the age of 12 and has achieved many National and Inter- national Competition successes, having represented KUGB Wales from the age of 18.
He retired from International competition at the age of 39 to focus on instructing, but still competes to this day, most recently achieving a gold medal the 2015 KUGB Welsh Championships Senior Team Kata and coming 3rd in the Senior Team Kumite.
He started his own club at the age of 18 and having now been instructing for over 26 years, has developed one of the most successful all-round Shotokan Karate clubs in Wales, focusing on teaching students all aspects of Shotokan Karate as well as specialist competition training in both Kumite and Kata.
He is constantly developing his personal karate knowledge, and recently attended brown and black belt course in Bath and Egham, as well as club courses held by experienced Senseis John Holdsworth and Julie Nicholson.
He took all his Kyu gradings up to 2nd Kyu under Sensei Sherry, his 1st Kyu with Sensei O’Neill and his Dan gradings with Sensei Enoeda and Sensei Sherry, culminating in 6th Dan in April 2016
His competition achievements started at an early age, winning the 1986 KUGB Welsh Championships over 5ft Kumite at the age of 13, the under 21 Welsh Kumite Champion at age 19 and the Senior Welsh Kumite in 1999. Since then he has achieved many National and International individual and team titles in both Kumite and Kata to date, including a European Bronze Medal in Kumite in 1999.
In 2013 he received his Long Standing Members award at the KUGB Welsh Championships which he felt was a great honour.
He feels his greatest achievements though come from his students’ success in not only their competition but also grading from Kyu to Dan grades. His club currently has several members in the Welsh Squad and these have achieved huge successes in both National and International competitions. Listed below are 3 current Welsh Team competitors from our club and their most recent successes. These members currently include Rachel Edwards, Charlotte Parry and Penny Sinclair.
As part of the club’s training, he is keen to involve other senior instructors from the KUGB and has held training courses in both Kata and Kumite with Senseis John Holdsworth, Julie Nickle- son and Garry Harford. He believes these courses have helped develop and improve his karate techniques as well as adding to his knowledge to help train his students.
