2019 WSKA World Championships - 20th to 22nd September 2019

The KUGB's England Squad achieved great success winning four Gold Medals at this year's WSKA World Shotokan Karate Championships in Odivelas, Portugal.

Karateka from all around the world descended on the Pavilhão Multiusos Odivelas as the Liga Portuguesa de Karate-Do hosted the World Championships over three days – 20th-22nd September. With over 750 entries from 25 countries, the lived up to expectations with 'world class' competitors producing Karate performances of the highest standard.

The KUGB was strongly represented at the Championships with International Teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Ethan Armstrong from KUGB England won Gold in a very exciting Senior Men's Kumite Final against Aleksandr Avvakumov from the Russian Federation

This was a significant achievement as he also won the ESKA European title in Nis, Serbia in 2018.

In the Senior Ladies Individual Kumite final England had two competitors, Sisters in Law, Rhianne and Rebecca Rawcliffe, a rematch of last year’s ESKA European Championships final. It was another incredibly exciting final with neither one making it easy on the other, but it was Rebecca who finally took the Gold.

Callum Wilson, Tushan Joseph, Aidan McLean and Alex Cockx won the Junior Men’s Team Kumite beating Sweden in a close and exciting final.

Niall and Luciano

In the Cadet Mens Individual Kumite, England’s Niall Gilligan fought Vasilii Koriakin from the Russian Federation in a thrilling final to win his first World title with team-mate Luciano Zanuni taking the Bronze.

Members of KUGB England and KUGB Wales Squads added further medals to the impressive haul.

Adding to Rhianne Rawcliffe’s Silver medal in the Senior Ladies Individual Kumite, Marcus Barker narrowly lost out to Egor Trubchaninov of the Russian Federation taking the Silver for England.

Cameron Graham, Ethan Armstrong, Ryan Tucker, Joseph Rawcliffe, James McGorian and Callum Wilson fought the eventual winners, Russia in the semi-finals of the Senior Men’s Team Kumite and won the Bronze medal.

Thea Priest, Katherine Cheshire and Libby Bayley won the Bronze in the Junior Ladies Team Kumite after losing to Russia in the semi-finals.

In Junior Men’s Individual Kumite, Callum Wilson fought superbly during the elimination rounds but lost to Andre Martins of Portugal in the semi final.

Wales girls

KUGB Wales’ Lily Rees, Emily Kahl and Bethany Nelson took Bronze in the Cadet Ladies Team Kumite after a very spirited semi final with Russia.

In the Youth Ladies Individual Kumite, England’s Miranda Moualeu made the semi finals after some very exciting fights. Miranda lost to the eventual winner, Ana Ribeiro from Portugal giving her the Bronze medal. 

The KUGB would like to thank all of the spectators who came to the WSKA Championships in Portugal last weekend for their support.
