Brown and Black Belt Course, Barnsley, 6 September 2003

Brown and Black Belt Course, Barnsley, 6 September 2003

The Metrodome in Barnsley was the setting for the Northern region's second brown and black belt course of the year. The excellent facilities at this sports centre make it very popular choice for the KUGB.

Training is free to KUGB members, and is provided to help maintain a uniform standard of karate amongst clubs and instructors.

The course was well attended with around 200 karateka, ranging from 3rd kyu up to 6th Dan. Attendees came from all over Britain, including the Isle of Man, to train under Sensei Sherry, 7th Dan. There was a strong feeling of camaraderie amongst the students and the senior grades, creating a great atmosphere. The lessons were technical and had an emphasis on both fundamental and advanced issues, which proved to be very enjoyable for all.

Gradings for 1st and 2nd Dan followed the lessons. The standard in the grading was high, which was reflected in the good pass rate. The KUGB now has a new "youngest black belt" - Samuel Halagan from Ruach aged 8 years 7 months passed his Shodan. Zac Galliford from Tekki SKC was 8 years 6.5 months when he passed his Shodan grading at Torbay in April, but he has aged considerably since then - he's now almost 9!

A very happy Sam Halagan with his Sensei Ronnie Christopher, 5th Dan and former European and World Team Shotokan Champion
