The Central Region Championships, one of the most prestigious and major events in the K.U.G.B. calendar, was held at the Queens Park Leisure Centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire on the 5th March 2011.

The tournament, boasting some 26 different categories, ranging from the Children's Ippon Kumite to the Senior Male team kumite event, started promptly at 10.00am.

An increase in participation was again seen this year. This was due, in the main, from the large number of entries received from several clubs: South Nottingham, Tamworth, Cambridge University and Lichfield.

The exceptional standard of the competitors saw many outstanding matches in both kata and kumite.

After a short interval the finals started at 3.30pm with the introduction of Senior Instructors:

  • Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan, Vice Chairman of the K.U.G.B and Chief Referee for the finals attended the championship for the 31st year.
  • Sensei Rob Welsh 6th Dan, Championship Co-ordinator and Central Region Officer.
  • Sensei Richard Poole 6th Dan, Welsh Regional Officer, President of the W.S.K.A and the E.S.K.A.
  • Sensei Nick Heald 6th Dan, Senior Instructor at the Leeds Karate Academy.

In addition, the following Central Region members were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements throughout the year:

The highlight of the evenings finals was the "blue ribbon" event, the Mens Senior Team Kumite, and was one of the closest contested finals seen for many years.

The match between South Notts and Cambridge University ended with one win each.

However, South Notts took the title as they had scored with the only full Ippon.
