Students National Championships - 15th November 2003

Chesterfield was again the setting for this year's students' championships. Universities and clubs from all over the country sent their teams to compete for the titles.

The day's finals are summarised below:

Female Kyu Grade Kata

There were some very promising brown belts in this category, with E Barker from Gateshead taking first place with Gojushiho Sho. In second place, L James from Tekki wasn't far behind with Enpi. Third and fourth places went to K Flynn from Manchester Uni with Bassai Dai and K Behnke from Aberystwyth with Heian Godan.

Ladies' 7th-4th Kyu Kumite

J Kemsey from Liverpool Uni faced K Behnke from Aberystwyth for the final of this event. Behnke took the lead, scoring with a chudan reverse punch. Kemsey tried to even up the scores, but it was Behnke who took the title, finishing the fight with another fast chudan punch.
Joint third in this event were C Williams from York and M Jones from Liverpool Uni.

Ladies' Brown Belt Kumite

In the final of this event were J Smedburg from Liverpool Uni and E Barker from Gateshead. Both ladies were fired up and there was plenty of action for the crowd. It was Barker who scored first with a jodan reverse punch. Barker then ended the fight decisively with another jodan punch as she blocked and countered Smedburg's attack.
Third place was awarded to M McMaster from Manchester Uni and H Lockett from Aberystwyth.

Male Kyu Grade Kata

Heian Godan seemed to be a popular choice in the male kyu grade kata, with three of the four finals choosing it as their favourite. Aberystwyth's K Nagasawa's performance gave him the gold medal, with J Cohen from Haverhill in second place for Bassai Dai. M Apps from Tekki took third, with B Yarr from York in fourth place.

Male Kumite 7th-4th Kyu

R Morris from Manchester Uni faced A Amiri from Staffordshire Uni in this final. Amiri seemed confident, as he took the first point with a chudan punch. Morris fought back but was unable to even up the scores. Amiri finished with a jodan punch to give him the fight.
In joint third place were Y Abasov from LSE and J Robin from Warwick Uni.

Male Brown Belt Kumite

A Ajaga from Manchester Uni fought K Nagasawa from Aberystwyth for the male brown belt title. Ajaga went into the lead when he attacked with two punches - the second one landing strong, giving him the point. Ajaga then continued to dominate the fight, scoring the decisive point as he ran in at Nagasawa, landing with a jodan punch.
J Wallace from Liverpool Uni and J Cohen from Haverhill both took third place.

Ladies' Team Kata

Wales dominated this category with Tekki A taking gold for Enpi. Cambridge were second with Jion, Aberystwyth third with Heian Sandan and in fourth place were Tekki B with Tekki Shodan.

Ladies' Black Belt Kata

The standard in this event was very high, with some English and Welsh squad members making the final. X Holstein from Tekki proved to be the winner with her excellent performance of Gojushihosho. In second place was H Sterling (2003 Children's Nationals kata and kumite champion) from Canterbury Uni with Kankudai. K Payne took third with Jiin and in fourth was N Balyckyi with Gankaku.

Ladies' Kumite

The first semi-final was between Z Campbell from Warwick Uni and H Sterling from Canterbury Uni. Campbell has just returned from the WSKA World Championships with the ladies' kumite individual and team world titles and she was still on top form as she set Sterling up for two of her trademark chudan reverse punches to take the fight.

The second semi-final was between Z Collard from South Notts and C McGrath from Sendai. This was a very busy fight with lots of action. McGrath took a point early on, leaving Collard with some catching up to do. Collard went in for a kick but McGrath saw it coming and went straight in with a chudan punch to take the fight.

The final was then between Z Campbell and C McGrath. McGrath put up an excellent fight against the World champion, putting the pressure on Campbell. The first clash went Campbell's way as her chudan punch landed just before McGrath's jodan punch. It was Campbell who then went on to take the title, finishing the fight with a well-timed chudan punch as McGrath went in for the attack.

Male Team Kata

A very strong performance from Leeds with Jion gave them gold in this event. In second place were Cambridge Uni, also with Jion. Third place went to Hoku Shin for Unsu and Tekki took fourth with Heian Sandan.

Ladies' Team Kumite

The two teams in this final were Tekki A and Warwick Uni.

The first two fighters were I Godfrey-Glynn from Tekki and Z Campbell from Warwick . There were no surprises in the match, as Campbell took the fight convincingly with two chudan reverse punches.

The second fight was between X Holstein from Tekki and C Payne from Warwick. Holstein desperately needed to even up the scores and she didn't let her team down. Holstein took the first point with a chudan punch and then a clash went Holstein's way as her chudan punch landed first.

The final fight was between L James from Tekki and S Yong from Warwick. James was first to score with a chudan punch. It was then all up to Yong to even up the scores for Warwick, but she let time run out and it was Tekki A who took the title.

Liverpool Uni and Aberystwyth took joint third place.

Male Black Belt Kata

There were some familiar faces in this event with three of the four finalists being England squad members. A Hesketh (twice national kata champion) from Red Triangle took the gold with Sochin. A Duffy (current under 18 Grand Slam kumite champion), also from Red Triangle, took second place with Sochin. In third was D Ghazi from LSE with Unsu and fourth was R Mitcham from Hoku Shin with Sochin.

Male Black Belt Kumite

The first semi-final was between L McLeod from Chelmsford and I MacLeod from Cambridge Uni. I MacLeod took the first point with a strong chudan punch. He then secured his place in the final, covering a lot of distance with a long chudan punch.

The second semi-final was between A Duffy from Red Triangle and R Zealand from Leeds. The first clash saw both fighters hit together, but it was Duffy's chudan punch that hit just first before Zealand's jodan. Zealand kept Duffy busy as he tried to get a point back but it was Duffy who went through to the final, securing his place with a thundering chudan mawashi geri.

The final fight was between I MacLeod and A Duffy. A Duffy looked for the early lead with a chudan mawashi geri but it was not to score. He then went in for another kick, following up with a jodan backfist to give him the first point. Duffy then went on to take the title back to Liverpool with a lovely jodan punch.

Male Team Kumite

The final was between Hoku Shin and LSE (London School of Economics).

The first fight was between P Taraj from Hoku Shin and Y Abasov from LSE. This was a busy fight and Abasov had a large height advantage. However, by the end of the two minutes neither fighter had scored, hence the first fight ended in a draw.

The second fight was between D Stitson from Hoku Shin and D Ghazi from LSE. Ghazi scored first with a chudan punch. It was then up to Stitson to get it back for his team and he did so with a strong chudan mawashi geri. It was Ghazi who was to take the fight though, with a long chudan reverse punch.

The final fight was between R Mitcham for Hoku Shin and J Wood for LSE. This was a very exciting fight with plenty of action at the start, but nothing scoring. The fight then calmed down, and with Mitcham in need of the points Wood was happy to let the clock run down without any action. The fight ended in a draw and it was LSE who took the title.

In joint third place were Leeds A and Manchester A.
