2025 Karate Summer School

This year’s Summer Karate Course at Lancaster University once again proved to be a highlight of the KUGB calendar, with around 120 participants in every session.

Held in the historic city of Lancaster, Lancashire – just 40 minutes from Blackpool – the course offered not only world-class karate training but also the chance to explore a region rich in history, culture, and stunning scenery. For many, the days didn’t end when training finished, with sightseeing and social activities adding to the memorable atmosphere. The course is designed to suit everyone, whether they want to immerse themselves in every training session or balance their karate with sightseeing and social time.

Training was led by an outstanding line-up of senior instructors:

Sensei Billy Higgins – 8th Dan, Sensei Jim Brennan – 8th Dan, Sensei Frank Brennan – 8th Dan, Sensei Garry Harford – 8th Dan and Special Guest Instructor- Sensei Jack Somers – 5th Dan

Their combined experience and technical excellence ensured that every participant, from beginner to senior grade, was challenged, inspired, and equipped with new skills to take back to their dojos.

In addition to the main course classes, there were two dedicated dan grading classes, which proved to be another highlight of the week. Participants commented on how these sessions provided clear technical focus, constructive feedback, and the chance to polish key elements under the guidance of senior instructors. Many said the classes boosted their confidence and gave them a much clearer understanding of what is expected at higher levels.

Alongside the daily training, participants had the opportunity to work towards their KUGB Instructor’s Qualification, run by Sensei Rob Manning and Sensei Dylan Gibson.  Congratulations to those who completed their qualification on Tuesday 5th August.

Our newly qualified instructors are:
Matthew Hudson- Seigo-Sei
Gary Johnston – Seigo-Sei

First aid course with Dr Tim Baker and Mental Health discussion with Yasmin Geddis

Superstars

Participants took part in the always-popular Superstars Competition, which brought out some fierce but friendly rivalry.

The social evening, hosted by quizmaster extraordinaire Sensei Billy Higgins, was a huge success – well attended, full of laughs, KUGB family spirit, and friendly competitiveness.

The final day saw a spirited closing session, followed by a dan grading.  Congratulations to those who successfully passed.
