The KUGB’s 1st Grand Slam of 2016 took place at the newly opened Queens Park Leisure Centre in Chesterfield on Saturday, 28th February.
The Grand Slam is a major event in the KUGB calendar and has grown significantly in size and importance over the years. This year there were strong teams from KUGB England, Scotland and Wales ready to battle against their close international rivals. Prior to the competition, the KUGB Squads took part in their own training sessions with their own Squad Coaches to ready themselves for the fierce competition ahead.
Once the Squad sessions were complete, it was time to get down to business and in order to ensure the smooth running of the competition, experienced National and International Referees and Judges were in attendance.
Throughout the eliminations and finals there were some outstanding performances that entertained the crowd. Sensei Sherry (9th Dan), Chairman and Chief Instructor of the KUGB, was very pleased with the attitude and spirit of all of the competitors, and commented on the strength and numbers of the young Karateka coming through the ranks for their respective countries.
