October is World Blindness Month, and we are incredibly proud to share the inspiring journey of Mark Gaffey, a dedicated member of Newcastle-under-Lyme SKC. Mark, who was born blind, passed his 4th Dan grading earlier this year—a remarkable achievement that showcases his determination and spirit.
Mark’s guide dog, Peanut, is a regular presence at his training sessions, and their partnership is a true testament to his perseverance. His journey serves as an inspiration to others who may think they can’t pursue karate or face challenges that seem insurmountable.
Earlier this year, the KUGB raised £3,500 for Guide Dogs, as nominated by Mark, and we will be presenting the cheque this weekend at the National Youth and Student Championships and Grand Slam. We’ve also raised enough to name our own guide dog puppy, with more exciting details to follow soon!
Mark’s Story:
Being born blind, all my Karate life has been a challenge!
I had an awareness of the Katas required for the 4th Dan grade but now came the intense work to refine them without sight. Katas for this level require a lot more understanding of the techniques timing and most of all when you have never been able to see, or balance, which is an immense challenge.
Whilst preparing I was not able to use visual media, such as mirrors or video taken of myself, to show up areas that needed more attention in my training.
Any corrections pointed out by by Senseis, Steve Hulson and Peter Marchant at Club level, and Sensei Brennan at Central Kata Squad had to be memorized and worked on at home. Sometimes these would have to be constantly repeated to re-enforce them as there were no visual clues in class to remind me.
The intense training at Kata squad where everything is constantly repeated aided me in memorising the techniques.
Passing my 4th Dan made me feel that all the years of hard work, bruises plus gentle, and sometime not-so-gentle, encouragement from all Senseis made it worthwhile.
To achieve anything in life with severe visual impairment, requires great determination and self-discipline, any knock back can severely dent your confidence, so you must take stock and fight on.
SO NEXT STOP 5th DAN!!
