Sensei Billy Higgins - 8th Dan

Sensei Billy Higgins

Billy Higgins was born in Bootle, Liverpool, on 14 August 1945. From an early age he showed a natural passion for sport, excelling in boxing, gymnastics, and football during his school years.

In 1965 he began training in Wado Ryu Karate, quickly establishing himself as a fast, skilful and highly technical fighter. During the early 1970s he competed and coached in many all‑styles competitions under the Martial Arts Commission and the BKCC All Styles Squad. In 1972 he was selected as team captain, achieving 2nd place in the individual event and 3rd place in the team event at the World Championships in Paris. During this period of intense training, Billy achieved the grade of Second Dan and served as a Wado Ryu grading examiner. He rapidly made a name for himself on the competition circuit. His speed, timing, and tactical intelligence drew widespread attention, and it wasn’t long before senior members of the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) took notice.

Recognising both his talent and his potential, Billy was invited to join the KUGB.  The experience proved pivotal. He was immediately struck by the exceptional technical standard, discipline and spirit of the KUGB karate-ka. Their approach aligned perfectly with his own ambitions for growth and excellence. At the same time, he was experiencing increasing difficulty travelling to enhance his training with the senior instructors in Wado Ryu. Billy made the decision to join the KUGB in 1970. It was a turning point that would shape the rest of his competitive career and establish him as one of the organisation’s most respected and accomplished figures.

Billy went on to enjoy one of the most distinguished competitive careers in British karate history, earning numerous national and international titles. Highlights of his career include becoming Individual European Champion twice, placing 2nd in the WUKO All Styles World Championships in Paris (1975), winning the 1976 European All Styles Championships, and achieving 3rd place in Tokyo. As captain of the 1975 British All Styles Team, he led the squad to a historic victory over Japan to win the World Championships in Los Angeles. He was also a key member of the KUGB Senior International Team that won the European Championships an extraordinary five times and winning the European championships with the all styles team. Billy’s technical ability and fighting style became legendary. He is particularly renowned for his lightning‑fast Ashi‑Barai / Gyaku‑Tsuki combination, which overwhelmed opponents and secured countless victories. His dynamic Tai Sabaki, sharp timing, and tactical intelligence made him one of the most respected fighters of his generation.

Beyond competition, Billy has contributed enormously to karate in the UK and internationally. He served as coach and manager of the EKB squad, and as squad coach for both the KUGB Scottish and Southern Regions. He is a KUGB Grading Examiner and a qualified International Referee, widely admired for his clarity, fairness, and deep technical knowledge. A popular teacher and examiner, he remains in high demand across KUGB clubs.

Billy’s dedication to the KUGB has been unwavering since joining in 1970. His commitment to coaching, technical excellence, and the development of future generations has played a vital role in maintaining the organisation’s strength and reputation. In addition to his martial arts achievements, Billy has been honoured for his outstanding contributions to the community:
