Gary started Karate in 1974, joining Aaisatsu Karate Club in Chester under Sensei Jim Smith. He still has a strong memory of walking into the Dojo for the first time being anxious and nervous but eager to do something a bit different.
Karate quickly became a defining part of Gary’s life. Sensei Smith was not just his instructor but a mentor and a guiding force through Gary’s life.
From 1976, Gary started competing at Regional and National competitions, gaining some reasonable success in both Team Kumite and Kata. In 1994, he decided to retire from competitions, but he was still keen to be involved in some way. In 1994, he became a KUGB Judge, and the following year he qualified as a KUGB Referee. This is a role he is still very much active in.
Gary has been fortunate enough to have travelled to Japan on numerous occasions, thus deepening his appreciation and understanding of Karate tradition, training with many inspirational Karateka. He also has many fond memories of regularly attending Sensei Enoeda’s special courses at Crystal Palace.
His biggest influence in more recent years has been Sensei Frank Brennan. Gary regularly attends the Central Region Kata Squad courses under Sensei’s guidance.
Gary is an approved Assessor of Instructors, and, in 2024, he was honoured for 50 Years Membership with the KUGB.
He is part of the KUGB Safeguarding Team, which is an important role overseeing the safeguarding policies ensuring the safety and well-being of all our members.
In 2025, he was proudly awarded his 7th Dan from Sensei Brennan and the KUGB Technical Committee.
On reflection, he is proud of his achievements and grateful for the lifelong sense of community and purpose Karate has given him.
