2025 Kata Standardisation Course

Kata Standardisation Course with Sensei Brennan, May 2025

This weekend’s Kata Standardisation Course in Grantham brought together some of the most dedicated and experienced karateka in the KUGB, all committed to refining their knowledge, sharpening their standards, and upholding the technical precision that defines our organisation.

Led by Sensei Frank Brennan, 8th Dan, the course focused on the essential role of kata as a foundational element of grading, judging, and instructing. With his trademark clarity and depth, Sensei Brennan guided attendees through key katas, reinforcing both core fundamentals and advanced technical detail. From rhythm and timing to stances and transitions, no detail was left untouched.

Participants included Grading Examiners, Referees & Judges, Instructors, Squad members and dan grades from across the country – all striving not just to perform kata, but to truly understand it. The atmosphere throughout was one of mutual respect and collective improvement, echoing the KUGB’s ethos of continual development.

Courses like this are not simply about memorising moves – they are about preserving the integrity of KUGB Karate, ensuring consistency across dojos, and holding ourselves to the highest standard possible. Today’s training was a reminder that no matter how senior or experienced we become, there is always more to learn, refine, and honour in our karate.

For those preparing for Dan gradings, coaching others, or officiating as a referees or judges at National and Regional tournaments, today’s course was an essential step in staying sharp, unified, and aligned with the technical framework expected at the highest level.

Thank you to Sensei Brennan for his technical leadership and thank you to everyone  who attended.
