Sensei Simon Thompson

Simon began his karate journey in 1988 at the age of 18 under the instruction of Sensei Roger Sayce at the Aberystwyth Town Club. Introduced to karate by his best friend, Simon quickly developed a deep passion for Shotokan karate. He found inspiration not only in the art itself but also in his fellow students and, most importantly, in his instructor, Sensei Sayce, who became a true friend and mentor. Through this relationship, Simon was presented with countless opportunities to explore karate and the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB).

As an Orange Belt, Simon attended his first Lancaster residential course, where he was introduced to the broader karate community and met senior instructors. This experience deepened his commitment to karate, leading him to participate in numerous competitions, training courses, and executive meetings alongside his club members.

During these formative years, Simon trained extensively—six days a week, including double sessions on Saturdays. Under Sensei Sayce’s guidance, he learned the qualities and responsibilities of becoming a Sensei. He also assisted in teaching at various clubs and dojos that Sensei Sayce managed at the time.

The annual Torbay course became a pivotal part of Simon’s life, offering rich experiences shared with friends and fellow karate-ka. These moments profoundly shaped his life and identity. While studying at Birmingham University, Simon was part of the varsity-winning team kumite in 1993, benefiting from the leadership of Sensei Sid Gordon.

After the untimely passing of Sensei Sayce, Simon inherited what became known as TEKKI Karate Club, renamed Tekki R.S. in honour of its founder. As the chief instructor, Simon led six dojos with over 220 members. Despite relocating over 120 miles away for work, he continued to support the club with the help of Sensei Clive Davies. For more than ten years, Simon travelled from Cardiff to Aberystwyth every single weekend to maintain the club’s strength, diversity, and character. He also founded a new club in Cardiff, further extending his commitment to the art.

Simon earned his Kyu grades under the guidance of Sensei Brennan, transitioning smoothly into his role as a club instructor. He heavily relied on Sensei Brennan’s support and guidance and trained under him for many years. Simon currently holds the rank of 6th Dan, a testament to his perseverance and dedication despite considering himself a “non-natural.” His journey to 6th Dan was challenging, but his passion and determination led him to achieve far beyond what he initially believed possible.

With over 30 years of experience as a national-level referee, Simon has also served as a European and World referee for the past decade. He is honoured to hold the position of Welsh National Specialist Kata Coach and has been a member of the KUGB Executive Committee for the last 10 years, currently serving as the Welsh Regional Chairman.

Simon’s commitment to karate extends to his family as well. His wife, Rhianedd, holds a 3rd Dan, and they look forward to their children continuing the family tradition in karate.

Simon would like to express his gratitude to everyone in the KUGB for their support, tolerance, and kindness throughout his journey. He eagerly anticipates the next 30+ years in karate
