The KUGB’s prestigious Shotokan Cup, the National Individual Championships, took place on Saturday in Grantham, drawing competitors from across the country for a day of high-standard competition and spirited karate.
The Shotokan Cup, established to showcase the talents of individual karateka, remains one of the highlights of the KUGB calendar. This year’s event did not disappoint, with excellent attendance and a strong display of both technical skill and fighting spirit throughout the day.
Competition Highlights
Across both kata and kumite events, the standard was exceptionally high. In the kata divisions, competitors demonstrated precise technique and powerful performance, with several finals decided by narrow margins. Kumite bouts delivered thrilling action, with sharp timing, strong tactics, and excellent control on display. Matches were hard-fought but conducted with exemplary etiquette and sportsmanship, reflecting the true spirit of Shotokan karate. Each year two special Shotokan Cups are awarded for the Most Outstanding Competitors in Kata and Kumite. This year they were awarded by Sensei Frank Brennan to Grace Snowdon (Sendai Kushiro) for Kata and Niall Gilligan (Solihull Karate Academy) for Kumite

Spirit and Sportsmanship
Beyond the medals, the event was marked by camaraderie and respect, with competitors and coaches supporting one another throughout the day.

The KUGB extends sincere thanks to the referees, judges, table officials, volunteers, and coaches whose tireless work ensured the smooth running of the Championships. Their dedication continues to be the backbone of events such as the Shotokan Cup.
Congratulations to all who took part, whether competing or supporting. The Shotokan Cup once again highlighted the strength, skill, and spirit of KUGB karate.
